NASA Cassini Scientist for a Day - South Zone - Invitation to Schools

Planetary Society India in association with NASA CSAD India Organizing Committee is organizing “NASA Cassini Scientist for A Day” India Contest 09 with technical support of CASSINI PEOPLE OUTREACH DIVISION, JPL, NASA.

What is the Eligibility Criteria ?
Eligibility: Students in 5- 7 and 8-10 with knowledge or interest to learn about Planet Saturn and the Cassini - Huygens mission of NASA can participate.

Participation through Essay : Students imagining themselves as Mission Scientist need to write an essay of 500 words. For this students are given three target images. Students have to choose any one target and write the essay with
i. Reasons for selection of that target
ii. What he/expects to find
iii. Why he thinks selected target is an effective choice as a scientist for a day.

What will Winners Get ?
1. Will get an opportunity to interact with scientists of NASA
2. Name of the Winning Students will be published in NASA site while
Recognizing students as “Cassini Scientist for a Day” from India
3. Will participate in Direct Videoconference with Current/Ex NASA
Scientists.

How do we learn about Cassini Mission/Planet Saturn ?
It has been observed that there are number of websites providing information on Planet Saturn, Cassini Mission. However it has been found most of them contain stale information.Which is effecting chances of essay to qualify.

To assist students society is organizing awareness sessions for teachers/students in Hyderabad, Vijaywada, Vizag. This is dependent on number of participants who apply.

Is there any material provided by the society ? Yes, society will distribute
1. Special CD and
2. 100 pages Printed Material
and other material for teachers at nominal cost which may range up to Rs.200-300 depending on requirement. This project being unfunded (by any authorities) all the cost of organizing the session, production of CD, Print material,other expenses involved in coordination and organizing video conference is born by the society.

Request: Being a prestigious NASA project we request school managements to sponsor the costs for students (incapable of paying)who can excel in this contest. This initiative of schools in turn will help us to decide early date/venue for the session to be organized.

Free Distribution for Poor School Students: Further society is hopeful of receipt of support from sponsors. In order to cater to poor students society will organise Free distribution of CD, Material along with awareness session even if there is no support from schools/sponsors.

Number of participants from each school : There is no restriction on number of students who can participate from each school.

If you are interested Please send a mail on letterhead of the school enclosing list of participants to planetarysocietyindia@gmail.com. Depending on similar response from other schools we will organize the session at a selected venue and inform you.
